New Starter – Meet Martynas, Rails Engineer
Introducing Martynas Austys, our new Rails Engineer.
We have recently been expanding our development teams and we caught up with new starter Martynas to share some things we didn’t know about him – including a penchant for pants and an appreciation of pirates!
What was your favourite childhood movie?
I wasn’t immensely big on movies, though the oldest ones that I liked and can remember are “The Lion King” and “Spirited Away”.
What is one item you couldn’t live without?
I could probably live without a lot of things, but life would definitely be difficult without pants.
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Wouldn’t you, in theory, be able to eat a variety of sandwiches and retain a balanced diet?
If you were an animal, what kind would you be?
Easy, a dog – preferably a Bernese Mountain Dog or a Great Pyrenees.
If you could have dinner with anybody in history, dead or alive, who would it be, and why?
I’d choose Edward Teach, a.k.a. Blackbeard. Besides his legendary status as a pirate, I’d be curious to hear about his adventures and maybe inquire about any hidden treasures.
What unusual or quirky things do you do regularly?
I am typically at the gym by 5 am, which is somewhat uncommon. Otherwise I’m pretty average.
What’s your favourite movie?
“The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”
If you were stranded on a desert island, what band or music would you want?
If I was by myself stranded on a desert island, there is only one answer THIS and, ideally, I’d be able to see the video projected on to the sky.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I’d go to Japan. The combination of delicious food, rich culture and stunning landscapes makes it quite an attractive destination.
What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?
Waffles – whether they are fruit or berry topped, chocolate covered, or a combination, I become quite the fiend.
What’s the greatest challenge you overcame?
One of the greatest challenges was actually going against the social norms by wearing shorts during winter, but it made for some unforgettable memories with friends. On a more serious note, turning my academic performance around in my last year of high school was a major accomplishment. Despite my attendance hovering around 40%, I managed to secure a government-funded spot at a top technology university. The amount of learning I had to do to catch up was no joke, and I doubt I’ll ever top that level of determination.
How would you explain your Rails Engineer job to a 5-year-old?
I can speak the language computers use, and with some convincing, I can make them do cool stuff.
